The Love Theme in Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress

The Love Theme in Balzac and the Little Chinese SeamstressIn addition to Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Mary O'Hara is one of the most important writers of the nineteenth century. She wrote a series of novels in the late nineteenth century that are still well-loved and still considered classics. The first of these novels, and the one that has probably the most influence on readers today, is A Star is Born, which was written by the same writer who wrote The Romance Novel. Although there were several Victorian novels and romances that influenced this novel, A Star is Born is primarily remembered for its love triangle. The narrator in the novel is a young woman named Eliza Lyall. The love triangle can be seen as a story of several different women in three different locations. In Balzac's novel, the narrator is studying at the Sorbonne. At this time, there is a love triangle going on between her new roommate, The Marquise of Champloo; the granddaughter of a French countess; and the niece of a Chinese prince. The narrator was chosen by chance, when she comes to learn of the Marquise's new lover. In the second novel, which is also referred to as A Tale of Two Cities, the narrator travels with another man, Maximilien Jeckel, to the seaboard house of a family who is very wealthy. While they are there, she learns that her Aunt Rachel has just been kidnapped by pirates. In A Little Chinese Seamstress, the narrator visits China, where she lives with her husband, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. She is introduced to the family of a wealthy family in Beijing and meets a young American girl named Dr. Lin Shih-Chieh.As in A Star is Born, the narrator finds herself in love with a Chinese princess and spends a great deal of time with her. However, the main difference is that the princess is engaged to marry a foreign army officer. The main conflict in this book is that Dr. Lin is looking for her love in order to find out about her Aunt Rachel. In addition to the romantic love that the narrator experiences in these novels, she also comes across other men in her life. Many of the characters in these novels are not exactly who they seem to be, but it is her nature to try to keep secrets. These secret lovers would later help to shape the characters in other Balzac novels. In addition to A Star is Born, A Little Chinese Seamstress, and A Tale of Two Cities, some of the other novels that have been adapted into movies include The Metamorphosis, Ulysses, and Persian Nights. Many of these adaptations have included a romantic love theme, so it is clear that this theme is very popular in literary circles.
